Notation Interpretation

Notation Interpretation

Today I was quite cryptic and we left a lot to interpretation…

The group choreographed their own movement sequences using props. The room was very colourful and there were excellent ideas including semaphore and dance of the seven veils! The group showed each other their dances and then we had cake!

After the well earned break I briefly told the group about Labanotation, but I didn’t give much away. It’s a way of recording dance without words or pictures. Symbols are used instead. It’s a bit like a musical score or a code. I then asked the group to design their own symbols and patterns to represent the movements in their dance. By being deliberately vague we found that everyone had different ideas.

We then de-constructed the codes and, like a group of Picassos, used patterns and shapes to create some beautiful art.
